Adult Psychological Assessment for Diagnostic Clarification

When Symptoms Overlap and Nothing Feels Clear, Diagnostic Testing Can Help You Understand What’s Really Going On

You may know something is affecting your focus, mood, anxiety, relationships, work, school, sleep, or daily functioning — but still not have a clear answer for why.

Maybe you have been told it is ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, a mood disorder, or “just burnout.” Maybe different providers have given different explanations. Maybe treatment has helped some, but not enough. Or maybe you have spent years trying to manage symptoms without fully understanding what is driving them.

At Amica Clinical Consulting, we provide culturally competent adult psychological assessments specifically focused on diagnostic clarification. This service is designed to answer one central question:

What diagnosis, or combination of factors, best explains what you are experiencing — and what should happen next?

A diagnostic clarification evaluation can help identify whether your symptoms are best explained by ADHD, a learning disability, anxiety, depression, bipolar-spectrum symptoms, trauma, OCD, grief, sleep-related concerns, somatic symptom concerns, or another clinical pattern.

The goal is not just to give you a label. The goal is to help you leave with a clearer clinical picture, a better understanding of what may be going on, and practical recommendations for treatment, referrals, or next steps in care.

Fees and Payment

The initial consultation visit is $450.

Adult diagnostic clarification evaluations typically range from $1,050 to $4,800, depending on the scope of testing, the referral question, and the type of documentation needed.

Because diagnostic clarification evaluations are individualized, the total fee may vary based on whether the assessment includes ADHD testing, learning disability testing, mood or anxiety assessment, trauma-related measures, records review, accommodations documentation, or other clinical questions.

Before testing begins, Amica Clinical Consulting will review the recommended evaluation plan, estimated fee, payment expectations, and what is included in the assessment process.

Depending on the evaluation, fees include:

  • Clinical interview

  • Psychological testing

  • Scoring and interpretation

  • Records review, when applicable

  • Written report

  • Feedback session

  • Treatment, referral, or accommodation recommendations for work or college (does not include high-stakes testing), when clinically supported

Insurance: We not accept insurance directly. Payment is due at or before the start of the evaluation (after the initial consultation). We DO provide superbills for medically necessary services. Your insurance company may reimburse you for a portion of services, if they deem them to be medically necessary. Insurance often requires pre-authorization for psychological testing services. We cannot guarantee reimbursement and we do not interact with the insurance company directly or complete tax forms or bill them for services. Services for academic/learning disabilities are typically not covered by insurance. We accept major credit cards (including HSA/FSA cards).

Focused Diagnostic Clarification, Not One-Size-Fits-All Testing

This service is not a brief symptom screener, a general therapy intake, or a one-size-fits-all testing battery.

It is a structured psychological assessment designed for adults who need help clarifying a diagnosis, understanding overlapping symptoms, or identifying why treatment has not fully addressed the problem.

The evaluation is tailored to the clinical question so testing is useful, targeted, and clinically meaningful. For some adults, the main question may be whether ADHD is present. For others, the concern may be whether symptoms are better explained by anxiety, depression, bipolar-spectrum symptoms, trauma, OCD, sleep disruption, a learning disability, somatic symptom concerns, or a combination of factors.

The purpose is to help organize the clinical picture so recommendations can be more practical, specific, and useful for treatment planning, medication consultation, accommodations, referrals, or next steps in care.

You May Benefit from Diagnostic Clarification If You Are Asking:

  • Is this ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, or something else?

  • Why have I been given different diagnoses?

  • Why has treatment not fully helped?

  • Could more than one condition be contributing to my symptoms?

  • Do I need documentation for accommodations or treatment planning?

  • What kind of support would actually make sense for me?

  • Why have I struggled with this for so long?

  • Is my difficulty with focus actually ADHD, or could it be anxiety, trauma, depression, sleep problems, or something else?

  • Are my mood changes related to depression, bipolar-spectrum symptoms, stress, hormones, trauma, or another clinical concern?

  • Do my physical symptoms, health worries, or sleep problems connect to my mental health?

When symptoms overlap, it can be difficult to know where to start. Diagnostic clarification helps organize the clinical picture so treatment and support can be more targeted.

This Evaluation May Be a Good Fit If You:

  • Are an adult seeking diagnostic clarification

  • Have received different diagnoses from different providers

  • Suspect ADHD or a learning disability

  • Experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, grief, sleep problems, or mood instability

  • Feel like previous treatment has helped only partially

  • Are starting therapy or psychiatric care and need a more complete diagnostic picture

  • Want a clearer understanding of your symptoms, patterns, and functioning

  • Have symptoms that overlap across multiple conditions

  • Are a high-functioning adult who appears to be managing externally but feels overwhelmed, stuck, or unclear internally

Conditions Assessed

Depending on your concerns, diagnostic clarification may include assessment of the following adult conditions.

Adult ADHD and Learning Disability Evaluations

Amica Clinical Consulting provides adult assessment for neurodevelopmental and learning-related concerns, including:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

  • Specific Learning Disorder in reading

  • Specific Learning Disorder in written expression

  • Specific Learning Disorder in mathematics

An adult ADHD or learning disability evaluation may be helpful if you have longstanding difficulties with attention, focus, organization, time management, procrastination, task completion, academic performance, reading comprehension, writing, or math-related skills.

These evaluations can also help clarify whether attention and performance concerns are better explained by ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disruption, learning differences, or a combination of factors.

Mood Disorder Evaluations

We provide diagnostic clarification for mood-related symptoms, including symptoms of depression, mood instability, irritability, elevated mood, reduced need for sleep, impulsivity, and changes in energy or behavior.

Conditions assessed include:

  • Bipolar I Disorder

  • Bipolar II Disorder

  • Cyclothymic Disorder

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder

  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

  • Other depressive disorders requiring diagnostic clarification

A mood disorder evaluation can help distinguish between depressive disorders, bipolar-spectrum conditions, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, ADHD, sleep-related concerns, hormonal patterns, and other overlapping presentations.

Anxiety Disorder Evaluations

Amica Clinical Consulting assesses anxiety-related conditions in adults, including:

  • Specific Phobias

  • Social Anxiety Disorder

  • Panic Disorder

  • Agoraphobia

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder

An anxiety evaluation may be appropriate if worry, fear, panic, avoidance, social discomfort, or physical symptoms of anxiety are interfering with daily life, work, relationships, school, travel, or decision-making.

Assessment can also help clarify whether anxiety is the primary concern or whether symptoms are connected to ADHD, trauma, depression, OCD, sleep problems, or another condition.

OCD and Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Evaluations

We assess obsessive-compulsive symptoms and body-focused repetitive behaviors, including:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

  • Trichotillomania, also known as hair-pulling disorder

  • Excoriation, also known as skin-picking disorder

These evaluations can help clarify whether symptoms are related to OCD, anxiety, trauma, stress, habit-based behaviors, or another clinical concern.

Trauma, Stress, and Grief Evaluations

Amica Clinical Consulting provides adult assessment for trauma- and stressor-related concerns, including:

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

  • Acute Stress Disorder

  • Adjustment Disorders

  • Prolonged Grief Disorder

  • Other Specified Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorder

A trauma or stress-related evaluation may be useful when symptoms include intrusive memories, avoidance, emotional distress, irritability, sleep disruption, hypervigilance, grief-related impairment, or difficulty adjusting after a major life event.

Assessment can help clarify whether symptoms are best understood as trauma-related, mood-related, anxiety-related, grief-related, or connected to another clinical pattern.

Somatic Symptom and Health Anxiety Evaluations

We assess psychological conditions involving distress related to physical symptoms, health fears, or neurological-like symptoms that may not be fully explained by medical findings.

Conditions assessed include:

  • Somatic Symptom Disorder

  • Illness Anxiety Disorder

  • Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder

These evaluations can help clarify the relationship between physical symptoms, emotional distress, anxiety, trauma, and daily functioning. Psychological assessment does not replace medical care, but it can help support treatment planning when medical and psychological symptoms overlap.

Sleep-Wake Disorder Evaluations

Amica Clinical Consulting provides assessment for sleep-related concerns that may overlap with mood, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, medical symptoms, or daily functioning.

Conditions assessed include:

  • Insomnia Disorder

  • Hypersomnolence Disorder

A sleep-related diagnostic evaluation may be helpful when sleep problems are persistent, impairing, or difficult to separate from mental health symptoms.

How the Evaluation Process Works

The assessment process is individualized based on your concerns, history, and referral question.

1. Initial Consultation

The process begins with an initial consultation visit. During this visit, we discuss your current concerns, relevant history, prior diagnoses or treatment, and what you are hoping to clarify through assessment.

The initial consultation helps determine whether diagnostic clarification testing is appropriate and what type of evaluation may be recommended.

2. Evaluation Planning

If assessment is appropriate, we will review the recommended evaluation plan, estimated fee, expected components, and next steps before testing begins.

This helps ensure the evaluation is tailored to the clinical question rather than using unnecessary or overly broad testing.

3. Clinical Interview and Records Review

The evaluation may include a detailed clinical interview and review of relevant records, when available. Records may include prior evaluations, therapy records, psychiatric records, academic records, workplace documentation, medical records, or accommodation history. We may also, depending on the concern, ask to speak with someone who knows you well or provide you with a questionnaire for them to complete.

4. Psychological Testing and Questionnaires

You may complete standardized psychological testing, rating scales, questionnaires, and other assessment measures selected based on your referral question.

Testing may evaluate areas such as attention, executive functioning, learning, mood, anxiety, trauma symptoms, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, sleep concerns, personality patterns, or other clinically relevant factors.

5. Scoring, Interpretation, and Diagnostic Formulation

After testing is complete, results are scored, interpreted, and integrated with your clinical history, symptoms, records, and referral question.

This step is where the clinical picture is organized to help clarify diagnosis, identify overlapping factors, and determine what recommendations may be most appropriate.

6. Feedback and Written Report

You will receive feedback and a written report that summarizes findings, diagnostic impressions, and recommendations.

The report is designed to help you better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and what supports may be appropriate moving forward.

Most reports are completed within 10 business days of the last visit or data collection.

What You’ll Walk Away With

After the assessment process, you may receive:

  • A clearer understanding of what diagnosis or combination of factors best explains your symptoms

  • Diagnostic impressions and differential diagnostic considerations

  • Test results and clinical interpretation

  • Summary of relevant history and current symptoms

  • A written psychological assessment report

  • Treatment recommendations

  • Referral recommendations, when appropriate

  • Recommendations for next steps and treatment, if applicable

  • Academic or workplace accommodation recommendations, when clinically supported

  • A better sense of what next steps may be most useful

The goal is for the evaluation to give you more than a diagnosis. The goal is to help you understand what may be going on and what to do next.

For Referring Providers

Amica Clinical Consulting accepts referrals for adult diagnostic clarification when a clearer psychological assessment may support treatment planning, medication consultation, accommodations, or next steps in care.

This evaluation may be helpful when a client presents with overlapping symptoms, inconsistent prior diagnoses, partial treatment response, or questions about whether symptoms are best explained by ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar-spectrum symptoms, trauma, OCD, sleep disruption, somatic symptom concerns, learning difficulties, or multiple contributing factors.

Referring providers may consider this service when:

  • Diagnosis is unclear or symptoms overlap across multiple conditions

  • ADHD is suspected but anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep, or mood symptoms may also be contributing

  • A client has not responded as expected to treatment

  • Medication planning would benefit from diagnostic clarification

  • Documentation may be needed for academic or workplace accommodations

  • A client needs a written report to support coordinated care

  • A broader clinical picture would help guide therapy, psychiatry, coaching, or referrals

With patient written consent, after evaluation completion, we can send you a copy of the diagnostic report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a diagnostic clarification evaluation?

A diagnostic clarification evaluation is a psychological assessment designed to help determine what diagnosis, or combination of factors, best explains your symptoms. It can be especially useful when symptoms overlap, prior diagnoses have been inconsistent, or treatment has not fully addressed the problem.

How is this different from a therapy intake?

A therapy intake is typically used to begin treatment and understand your presenting concerns. A diagnostic clarification evaluation is a more structured assessment process that may include psychological testing, diagnostic formulation, records review, and a written report with recommendations.

How much does an adult diagnostic clarification evaluation cost?

The initial consultation visit is $450. If testing is recommended, adult diagnostic clarification evaluations typically range from $1,050 to $4,800, depending on the scope of the assessment and the clinical questions being addressed.

Why does the cost vary?

The cost varies because each evaluation is individualized. Some evaluations may focus primarily on ADHD or mood and anxiety symptoms, while others may require broader testing, learning disability assessment, records review, accommodations documentation, or more complex differential diagnosis.

Do you accept insurance?

We are out-of-network and can provide superbills for possible reimbursement for services medically necessary for diagnosis and treatment. Services related to learning or academics or another primary reason are not typically considered medically necessary. We cannot guarantee reimbursement and do not interact with insurance companies directly.

Do you provide adult ADHD evaluations?

Yes. Amica Clinical Consulting provides adult ADHD evaluations as part of diagnostic clarification services. These evaluations may examine attention, executive functioning, mood, anxiety, sleep, trauma, learning history, and other factors that can affect concentration and daily functioning.

Can testing help distinguish ADHD from anxiety, depression, trauma, or bipolar disorder?

Yes. Diagnostic clarification can help determine whether attention or executive functioning difficulties are best explained by ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, bipolar-spectrum symptoms, sleep problems, learning differences, or a combination of factors.

Do you test for learning disabilities in adults?

Yes. We assess Specific Learning Disorder in reading, written expression, and mathematics for adults when clinically appropriate.

Do you provide adult autism evaluations?

No. Amica Clinical Consulting does not currently provide adult autism evaluations.

Can this evaluation help if I already have a diagnosis?

Yes. Some adults seek evaluation because a previous diagnosis does not fully explain their symptoms, different providers have offered different explanations, or treatment has not been as helpful as expected. Diagnostic clarification can help reassess the clinical picture and identify whether another condition, multiple conditions, or additional factors may be contributing.

Can I use the evaluation report for accommodations?

When clinically supported, the written report may include recommendations for academic or workplace accommodations. However, accommodations for certain things, such as high-stakes exams (e.g. LSAT, MCAT) typically require a different evaluation type/focus/analysis/record review, etc. Please let us know during the consultation so that we can select the appropriate test plan for you. Eligibility decisions are made by the school, employer, testing board, or requesting organization.

Do you offer evaluations through telehealth?

Telehealth-based assessment may be available for adults located in PSYPACT participating states, depending on factors such as the type of testing needed.

Do I need to be in a PSYPACT state during the appointment?

For PSYPACT-based telehealth services, eligibility may depend on where you are physically located at the time of the appointment. This will be reviewed before services begin.

How long does the evaluation process take?

Timeline varies based on scheduling, testing scope, records review, and report needs. Most diagnostic clarification evaluations are completed in approximately 3 visits.

What happens after I receive the report?

After the evaluation, you will receive feedback and recommendations for next steps. These may include therapy, psychiatric consultation, coaching, academic or workplace accommodations, medical follow-up, or referrals, depending on the findings.

Is this evaluation only for people who know what diagnosis they have?

No. This service is specifically designed for adults who may not know what diagnosis best explains their symptoms. It can be helpful when the main concern is uncertainty, overlap, or lack of clarity.
